DOWN Is In The Studio Recording Long-Awaited New Album

DOWN has entered the studio to begin recording its new album, tentatively due later in the year. A couple of photos from the studio can be found below.

In a recent interview with That Metal InterviewWindstein stated about the status of DOWN:  ”I’ve been in DOWN world [for the last few months] kinda, writing with DOWN and finishing up the writing for the album that’s [gonna come] out [in 2025] at some point… We’ve got 10 new songs, man. It’s awesome.”

From a previous interview with Jimmy:
Phil‘s amazing to write with because he’s really good with arranging, and he’s just really witty with his arrangements and bridges and stuff like that, that, I’d be, like, ‘Damn, I would have never thought of that.’ And that’s the beautiful thing about DOWN — it’s a room filled with dudes that are witty with their songwriting and stuff like that. We can write all day without Phil, but when he’s there, it’s that much better. It really is. ‘Cause he’d be, like, ‘Do this four times. Go into the bridge, then go back to the verse, and then we’ll do a pre-chorus, and next thing you know, you’ve got a killer song.”“He’s such a songwriter, it’s ridiculous,” Jimmy continued. “And he’s super, super f**king talented. Sometimes I read comments about people’s misconceptions, and I just hold my tongue. ‘Cause I know the truth. The dude can jam his a*s off. It’s just really fun to write with Phil. He’s always in a killer mood, especially when we’re being creative. We’ve been in so many bands together.”

DOWN Celebrates Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Of NOLA With Full-Length Exclusive Livestream August 29th

Band To Perform Iconic Album In Its Entirety + Portion Of Ticket Proceeds To Benefit United Houma Nation This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of DOWN’s 1995-released, now classic debut, NOLA. Plans for select shows featuring vocalist Philip Anselmo, guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein, drummer Jimmy Bower, and bassist Pat Bruders performing the record in its entirety were sidelined due to the global pandemic. In its wake, the band is pleased to announce an exclusive livestream later this month! Fittingly dubbed The Quarter Century Throwdown, the high production, multi-camera event will take place August 29th at 6:00pm EST using cutting-edge streaming technology to create a one-of-a-kind virtual concert experience. The show will be rebroadcast August 30th at 6:00pm EST until September 1st at 6:00pm EST. We’re extremely grateful to be celebrating the NOLA record with a live stream that the world can see. Watch the show and plug in through your loudest stereo! We love y'all!” DOWN Throwdown - August 29th. Get your virtual ticket Livestream tickets and packages are available at THIS LOCATION with additional merch designs available HERE. 10% of ticket sales will be donated to the United Houma Nation (UHN), a state-recognized tribe of approximately 17,000 members residing within a six-parish (county) service area encompassing 4,570 square miles. The six parishes -- Terrebonne, Lafourche, Jefferson, St. Mary, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines -- are located along the Southeastern coast of Louisiana. Within this area, distinct tribal communities are situated among the interwoven bayous and canals where Houmas traditionally earned a living. Although by land and road these communities are distant, they were historically very close by water. However, boat travel is no longer a viable option due to the effects of coastal erosion, which has left these waterways either nonexistent or impassable and, in many cases, completely open water that requires larger vessels for safe travel. The tribe today is presented with the unique challenges of preserving and maintaining its culture and way of life when the land is disappearing. The United Houma Nation is committed and dedicated to doing exactly that. Houma Down Tee In addition, 10% of proceeds raised from a special, limited DOWN/United Houma Nation t-shirt will also be donated to the UHN. For preorders, go to THIS LOCATION. With a collective resume encompassing Pantera, Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, EyeHateGod, and so many others, DOWN puffed out its first haze of sonic smoke from the belly of gritty old New Orleans in September of 1995 with the release of NOLA. At that moment, they instinctively summoned something akin to a ritual. The record was largely credited with introducing the sound of underground New Orleans metal — "slow, super-heavy, doomsday guitar riffs stamped with Anselmo's trademark bellow," as described by NOLA.com / The Times-Picayune — to a worldwide audience. By October of 1995, NOLA peaked at number 57 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for six straight weeks. The album spawned four singles: "Stone The Crow," "Lifer," "Temptation’s Wings," and "Bury Me in Smoke." “Stone The Crow" would move on to achieve commercial success when it reached number 40 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, becoming DOWN's first top 40 song. Twenty-five years later, there’s still no mistaking those gargantuan riffs, swamp blues leads, crashing drums, and hypnotic howls for absolutely anybody else under the sun.

DOWN's JIMMY BOWER Says 'Fans Deserve' To See 'NOLA' 25th-Anniversary Shows

Blabbermouth.net DOWN DOWN drummer Jimmy Bower spoke to Extreme Metal Festival News about the band's upcoming shows to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group's debut album, "NOLA". Asked how he feels about marking the LP's quarter-century mark, Bower said: "First off, it doesn't feel like it has been that long and secondly I'm just really glad that we are actually doing it. I think it's important for the fans and we haven't really been doing anything lately. We haven't done anything since 2016 due to Phil [Anselmo, vocals] being involved with THE ILLEGALS, Pepper [Keenan, guitar] is doing C.O.C., Kirk [Windstein, guitar] is full time with CROWBAR, I'm doing EYEHATEGOD, so there really hasn't been time for it, but we are finally going to take some time out to do it and it's going to be really cool. I think the fans deserve it and, fuck, it's going to feel good when we get up there. Once we get in the practice room and it's like 1,2,3, it's going to be so cool, man, and we have got Kirk back in there too, so it's going to be killer." DOWN's 2020 shows will be the band's first live appearances in seven years with Windstein, who left the group in 2013 in order to focus on CROWBAR and his family life. He was replaced by Bobby Landgraf, DOWN's former guitar tech who was previously in GAHDZILLA MOTOR COMPANY, a 1990s outfit also featuring Jason McMaster (DANGEROUS TOYS, WATCHTOWER), and HONKY. Asked if Kirk is returning to DOWN on a "permanent basis" or if he will just be back for these anniversary shows, Bower said: "Well, we aren't permanently a band right now. Just because Kirk is coming back for these shows doesn't mean that we will be doing another record or anything like that. We are just going to take it as it comes, because everyone is really busy with all their other bands. It would be great if we could do some stuff like that, but we will see." DOWN has several shows scheduled in 2020 so far, including appearances at this year's editions of the Graspop Metal Meeting festival in Dessel, Belgium, at the Copenhell festival in Copenhagen, Denmark, and at the Psycho Las Vegas festival in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Phil Anselmo About Lemmy’s Last Shows With Motörhead

Legendary former Pantera and present Superjoint and Down singer, Philip Anselmo, was interviewed on a recent edition of the "Fantasm" podcast. About the last time he saw late Lemmy perform with Motörhead: "We played a festival together and he wanted to see me. And, of course, I went in and talked to The Great One. I'd known him for two decades before that. And he was always, always, always — especially when I was young — he was always the one to tell me that music and your lifetime in music and your popularity and whatever, it's here and gone — it's a fleeting thing, and it's also ebb and flow. There'll be points in time in your career, if you keep going, where you'll be misunderstood, you'll be not popular, what you do won't be 'in.' And this was back when I was in Pantera. And he said to me back then, he said, 'You know, what you guys do really doesn't sound, to my ears, that different from what we do.' And at the time, I was thinking to myself, 'Yeah, it's different, but I guess it isn't all that different,' figuring it's drums-bass-guitar-vocals format; I can see where he's coming from. But the bigger picture now, in hindsight, is the fact that music is ebb and flow, and the more bands that you're in, the more different-size crowds you'll have, type of crowds you'll have, and all that shit." "Looking back on it, I remember about a couple of months before he passed when we did a festival together, I reminded him of that story. And he [told] me, 'Well, Phil, let's have a cigarette to our voices.' So we smoked a cigarette together." (via Blabbermouth) He also went on to say: "[Lemmy was] miserable during those last shows [he played with his band]; he was in a lot of pain. But he did not want to leave the stage. And I can feel that, because I'm a walking injury. I mean, I wake up and I feel like I'm in a car wreck every fucking day of my life; I've blown out a lot of different parts of my fucking body doing what I do. And I've realized that these days, I don't have to go up there and destroy myself to get the fucking point across." "[Lemmy] hated the pain, but loved the stage. And I can relate to that." This interview is available below via YouTube. Feel free to check it out:

Superjoint (Anselmo, Eyehategod) prep first LP in over a decade, share a song

PREORDER NOW![/caption] Superjoint, one of Phil Anselmo‘s many southern-fried supergroups, reunited last year (and toured with Danzig) after being broken up for some 10 years. Centered around Phil, Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod/Down), and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion), Superjoint are now getting ready to release their first new album in over a decade. It’s called Caught Up in the Gears of Application and it drops on Phil’s Housecore Records at some point in the future. In the meantime they’ve shared the first slice of new music, a song called “Sociopathic Herd Delusion.” Superjoint (FKA Superjoint Ritual) have always mixed the signature Bower/Anselmo brand of sludge groove with a healthy dose of hardcore, and the new song is no exception. It’s a furious, straight-ahead ripper that aims squarely for the gut. Meanwhile, Phil continues to be active both in creating music and controversy. And Jimmy Bower’s main gig Eyehategod are about to hit the road with Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe on vocal duties. ‘Cooking Hostile’ Returns With Limp Bizkit + Philip Anselmo in ‘Bake Stuff’ Spoof

loudwire.com It’s been almost one year since we last heard from the comedic YouTube series ‘Cooking Hostile’ from animator Joey Siler. Since the last episode, he’s created other heavy metal spoof videos, including ‘Becoming Black Metal.’ The latest video celebrates the return of the aforementioned Philip Anselmo-based series, parodying songs and giving cooking lessons. This time Limp Bizkit‘s Fred Durst and Wes Borland attempt to teach everyone how to bake, but Anselmo has other plans! This ‘Cooking Hostile’ episode is considerably shorter than previous installments, but is just as hilarious as the rest. Anselmo rolls up to the Kooking Hostyle Studios where the two Limp Bizkit members get busy inside in the kitchen with a parody of their hit single, “Break Stuff.” One of the lyrics takes on the song’s verse, stating, “To make the dough I crack an egg raw / I watch the chips fall / and if I get done mixing this dough I just might / bake something tonight / I’m rollin’ dough balls / with chocolate chips y’all / if I get done baking these cookies I might / bake a f–king cake tonight!” As expected, the chorus comes in as the cartoon Durst yells, “Give me something to bake!” Anselmo enters the scene embodying the bridge of the song and packing a chainsaw (what?) as he slices off the singer’s face. He climbs back into his car outside and heads out before the studio explodes. Message From Pepper

Any one who knows me is aware that I am not one to dabble much in social media, however due to what transpired last week at Dimebash I feel the need to respond and reach out to friends, family, music peers and fans worldwide.

I am saddened and confused by the behavior of Philip Anselmo last week. I do not condone what was gestured and said. This lapse in judgment of “making a joke” was in terribly poor taste and unacceptable.

That philosophy is the opposite of what I am about. My heart follows love and soul and my music has been inspired from people of all walks of life and musical styles. I view music as a gift that is universal and intended for all of humanity. As a proud New Orleanian, life is about celebrating diversity through music, it’s about bringing people together, not tearing apart.

I won’t speak for Phil but I’ve known him most of my life and I know there is not hate in his heart, however I hope at this moment in time Phil will focus his energy on self-reflection and begin the process of regaining perspective, healing himself and those lives he has touched through music

Through Down, Philip and I have written many beautiful and powerful songs in the past that have touched and inspired people from all walks of life positively and have helped pull many out of their own darkest hours. This is not something I take for granted and should always be at the forefront of one’s conscience to keep you grounded, humbled and grateful.

One of the responsibilities and joys, in my opinion, of being an artist or musician is having the ability to help make the world a better place.

I accept Phil’s apology, and I believe he can.

I’ll be there…if needed.

Love and Respect,

Pepper Keenan

Apology From Philip

"To all this will concern, Every citizen in this entire world has the unalienable right to live with dignity and respect without hate or oppression. And I mean this, with all of my crushed, yet, guilty heart. It's common knowledge that we can choose to either learn from our mistakes, or continue on a path of insensitivity and destruction. I am utterly responsible for the mistakes I have made, and can only give you my word to no longer do them in the present, through ACTION, not just mere words. My bandmates are now experiencing the consequences of my behavior, and I now publicly apologize to them as well. Never in my entire lifetime would I drag them down with me, and I've privately suggested to them that they move on without me. My biggest obstacle(s) are the over-indulging in the booze and blurting out spiteful, ignorant reductions of the human spirit itself. I will address these issues, head-on. I'm repulsed by my own actions, and the self-loathing I'm going through right now is justified by the hurt I've caused. I realize we live in a society where apologies are NOT accepted easily, yet long for a day when they can be, but I also understand if I'm shunned 'till I hit the dirt. From the bottom of my heart, and with all sincerity, I, once again, am truly sorry for the pain I have caused. With truth, love, hope & respect — Philip H. Anselmo

DOWN Makes Revolver's Top 10 Metal and Hard Rock Supergroups List

Revolvermag.com DOWN makes Revolver's top 10 list! Be sure to check out others who made the list RIGHT HERE. 10. Down Down represents the best-case scenario here: A supergroup that stands so tall on its own merits that it no longer even feels like a supergroup. Their 1995 debut, ‘NOLA,’ is a modern metal classic, and the band, led by Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan and Jimmy Bower, continues to squeeze out first-rate sludge metal to this day.

20 YEARS AGO: METAL SUPERGROUP DOWN ARRIVES WITH ‘NOLA’

UltimateClassicRock.com

Blowing the collective minds of the metal community due to its strength and cast of musicians, Down released its debut album, NOLA, on Sept. 19, 1995. The long-gestating project spawned out of a series of loose writing and jamming sessions between Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo and Corrosion of Conformity guitarist and singer Pepper Kennan, which began sometime in 1990. The two brought in more Deep South sludge royalty in guitarist Kirk Windstein from Crowbar and drummer Jimmy Bower from Eyehategod. As the recording of the album wound down, Windstein, who also played bass on NOLA, brought in his Crowbar bandmate Todd Strange to handle bass duties on the brief 13-date tour to promote the release. The opener, “Temptation’s Wings,” sets the tone for almost the entirety of the album with its minimalist-yet-devastating groove which starts fast, slows down and builds back up again into a crashing crescendo. Anselmo’s voice is in top form, arguably the best it’s ever been, as this was well before he began mimicking the screams of his favorite extreme metal bands and focusing on how much he could shred his vocal cords rather than delivering comprehensible lyrics. But on NOLA, the real star is the abundance of riffs, of which there seems to be a bottomless pool from which they’ve been drawn. “Lifer,” “Rehab” and “Hail the Leaf” put them on display right out of the gate, while the bluesy intro to “Eyes of the South” belies what’s to come, as a six-note salvo quietly creeps into the mix before becoming full blown just as Anselmo growls, “Goddamn!” Going against the grain, Down saves the best for last, with NOLA‘s closer “Bury Me in Smoke,” which to this day remains their lengthy final encore song in concert. The riff is absolutely punishing and relentless, continually accelerating and taking on different forms over a guitar solo and a momentary breakdown jam before fading out…and then fading right back in. Even at seven minutes long, it’s a track that can go on and on without getting tired. There are quieter moments on NOLA; “Stone the Crow,” the only charting single to receive airplay on MTV, expertly plays with the light/heavy element, while “Jail” is reminiscent of the mellowness Black Sabbath were going after on some of their material from 1971-74. And while it’s merely an instrumental interlude, the gentle, Anselmo-penned “Pray for the Locust” provides a welcome contrast to the majority of running order. Unfortunately, there was no capitalizing on the momentum that came with the unexpected triumph of NOLA. Pantera, C.O.C. and Crowbar were all at the peak of their respective levels of success, and the players soon returned to their “main” bands. By the time Down reconvened in 2002, all of its members were reportedly battling substance abuse issues – including Pantera’s Rex Brown, who stepped in on bass. It made for the more uneven Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow, a sonic mish-mash that has its moments but ultimately doesn’t fully measure up to the all-time classic that NOLA has come to be known. Phil Anselmo’s 10 Coolest Non-Pantera Projects

VH1.com Down, Superjoint + beyond: how the hardest working beast in extreme music keeps going.
When you mention Philip Hansen Anselmo, most heavy music fans known him primarily, if not exclusively, as the vocalist of Pantera. Alas, Anselmo’s time as the front-maniac of those metal titans is just the beginning of how New Orleans’ loudest and proudest son has impacted music—and so much more. Phil Anselmo continually creates, shapes, promotes, and inspires extreme rock—along with films, art, festivals, and other media—in an ever-evolving variety of vehicles and guises. And all of Phil’s undertakings, rest assured, definitely fall under the classification of “extreme.” In 2015, Anselmo’s Superjoint group embarked on their first tour in over a decade, and his annual Housecore Horror Festival is gearing up to once again soak Texas with sonic and cinematic boodle-letting. So now is a perfect time pay tribute to this tireless one-man metal mayhem factory with a salute to ten of his coolest, and heaviest, projects.
  1. Metal Grasshopper

To simply listen to Phil Anselmo’s ferocious singing voice is to, understandably, perhaps miss out on how hilariously good-humored he also happens to be. One performer who picked up on that side of Phil is comedian Dave Hill. Together, they created Metal Grasshopper, a web series in which Anselmo schools Hill in the uproariously definable art of being, at all times, metal.
  2. Boxing Insider

Phil Anselmo’s vocals pummel listeners like an onslaught of prizefighter combination punches, and to watch him in performance is see clearly how the sweet science impacted Phil’s stage presence. Anselmo comes by this association way more than honestly: as a lifetime fight fan, Phil frequently speaks about the sport, and reguarly serves as a writer and correspondent for the industry’s bible, Boxing Insider.
  3. Anton Crowley

Aleister Crowley aka “The Great Beast” was a world-changing British philosopher, occultist, multimedia artist, and champion mountain climber familiar to heavy metal fans through a multitude of venues, including Ozzy Osbourne’s “Mr. Crowley” and Jimmy Page taking up residence in the old sorcerer’s castle on Loch Ness. Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan in 1966 and three years later authoredThe Satanic Bible. Ever since then, both the book and/or some representation of LaVey’s chrome-domed, arched-eyebrowed visage have been as required fixtures in every budding headbanger’s bedroom alongside black-light posters, skull t-shirts, and Sabbath records coated with weed-rolling residue. In creating a new high-concept persona, Phil Anselmo combined the two unholy icons as “Anton Crowley.” He’s used the name while playing guitar for death metal gore hounds Necrophagia, singing lo-fi black metal with Viking Crown, screaming in the name of Satan for Christ Inversion, and other undertakings as he so feels possessed by the Anton Crowley spirit.
  4. Arson Anthem

Arson Anthem in the wake of Hurrican Katrina in 2005, when Mike IX Williams ofEyehategod lost everything he owed and temporarily moved in with his more fortunate NOLA neighbor, Phil Anselmo. The two friends bonded over Phil’s mammoth collection of old hardcore punk records, and decided to they needed to contribute something of their own to the art form. Williams sings for Arson Anthem, Phil plays guitar, Collin Yeo of PonyKiller mans the bass, and, on drums, its country music royalty and all-around hellraiser on his own terms, Hank Williams III.
  5. Housecore Horror Festival

In the 13th year of the 21st century, Phil Anselmo partnered with his friend and fellow movie and metal fanatic Corey Mitchell to create the Housecore Horror Festival, an annual three-day avalanche of superstar live bands, hair-raising film screenings, cult movie star appearance, and a marketplace of vendors peddling books, videos, clothing, art, toys, and other collectibles related to terrifying entertainment. Tragically, Corey Mitchell died suddenly after the second fest, and, as he would have demanded, the event carries on each year in his honor.
  6. Philip H. Anselmo and the Illegals

For a guy who’s been pumping forth new music in a vast array of forms at a superhuman rate for decades, it’s amazing and kind of amusing to realize that Phil Anselmo didn’t make his proper solo album debut until 2013. Walk Through Exits Only by Philip H. Anselmo and the Illegals landed smack in the swelter season of that year. It was, and will always remain, an instant classic.
  7. Guest Shots

Beyond the aforementioned Necrophagia and Eyehategod, Phil Anselmo just can’t seem to stop turning up on other artists’ albums—and who would ever want him to?! Among the other acts to which Anselmo has contributed vocals, musicianship, or both are Tony Iommi, Anthrax, Crowbar, Biohazard, Cattle Decapitation, Soilent Green, Jarboe, Vision of Disorder, Anal C—t, and… whoever else he’s in the studio with right this minute!
  8. Superjoint (Ritual)

Superjoint Ritual emerged as a loose-knit, but musically hyper-tight, Phil Anselmo side project that ran concurrently with Pantera throughout the 1990s. The band’s sound encompasses vast elements of extreme music, drawing primarily, though, from the three genres’ with which Phil is most famously associated: groove metal, hardcore punk, and black metal. Exclusively a live act during their first decade, Superjoint Ritual finally issued an LP in 2002, Use Once and Destroy, followed a year later by A Lethal Dose of American Hatred. After a long time off, the group, known now simply as Superjoint, reunited at the 2014 Housecore Horror Festival and hit the road a few months later.
  9. Housecore Records

Phil Anselmo founded Housecore Records in 2001, and it has carried on into the new millennium the tradition established in the ’80s by pioneering extreme indie labels on the order of Megaforce, Metal Blade, Earache, Roadrunner, Nuclear Blast, and SST. Artists on the Housecore roster include, of course, Anselmo’s projects, along with Eyehategod, Crowbar, Warbeast, Child Bite, King Parrot, Evil Army, Exactly Violent Style, Haarp, and Rat in a Bucket.
  10. Down

The supergroup Down is to sludge-sopped Southern stoner metal what Pantera was to groove metal: the very groundbreaking, spine-snapping embodiment of the concept itself. Centered on the core trio of Anselmo on vocals, Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity on guitar, Kirk Windstein of Crowbar on bass, and Jimmy Bower of Crowbar and Eyehategod on drums, Down formed in 1991 and has issued just five releases. Beginning with the epic, before-and-after line-in-the-swamp NOLA in 1995 on up to the dual EPs Down IV – Part I in 2012 and Down IV – Part II two years later, each record has been a masterpiece. Live, the group is pure brutal glory, as evidenced by the killer 2010 documentary,Down: Diary of a Mad Band. Do not miss it. Do not miss them. Down rules.

Landgraf On The State Of The Music Industry

Metalhammer.teamrock.com Guitarist says young bands get no help – and adds that they'll start writing next EP before end of the year Down guitarist Bobby Landgraf says the music industry is doing little to help up-and-coming bands.

He says Down are in the fortunate position of having a team of people who work behind the scenes for them, but that new acts have to do it for themselves – often with limited success. Landgraf tells The Front Row Report: "With Down there's a label and management and people who take care of that kind of stuff. But when you're up-and-coming, you're trying to do it yourself. "Shit, the industry is not even an industry any more. You just do what you can on your own and see how far you get it. Throw the flag up and see who salutes." READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE.

Live Photos from Starland Ballroom

AXS.com By: Annie Atlasman Nearly every year (Hurricane Sandy excluded), Down returns to New Jersey’s famous Starland Ballroom and packs the house with it’s dedicated fans old and many new, never leaving a dry body or eye in the house when the show finally does end. Between the insane amount of crowd surfers and old school fans alike singing along to “Lifer,” “Stone The Crow,” “Witchtripper” and “Conjure,” all the fans were working their way to the front to get a high five from vocalist Phil Anselmo or or trying to reach out to guitarist Pepper Keenan and air riff alongside his powerful guitar skills. Right now they are at the end of this tour cycle which was brief which also followed Anselmo’s tour with Superjoint Ritual. Any additional information would be found on their website or Facebook pages. Upcoming this fall, is Keenan’s Corrosion of Conformity touring around the nation and joining Motorhead’s Motorboatwhich still has a few cabins available and has a great lineup which includes Slayer as the headliner, alongside Motorhead. On this short ‘Eastbound and Down’ tour opened up with Mountain of Wizard and Child Bite who both offered a feel of Southern rock and both were bands of Anselmo’s Housecore Record Label. Child Bite offered a classic hard core metal sound which have certainly gained a few new fans at the New Jersey show. Mountain of Wizard offered more of a Prog metal sound which was also received a great reception by the crowd and definitely warmed up the crowd for Down. Photos from the show at Starland Ballroom can he seen HERE.

DIRT FEST 2015 ARTIST INTERVIEW: DOWN

NationalRockReview.com Sometimes you hit all the pitches yard and win the game. Other times you couldn’t hit yourself with the bat. Well, Down is crazy busy. Philip Anselmo (Vocals), Jimmy Bower (Drums), Pat Bruders (Bass), Pepper Keenan (Guitar), Bobby Landgraf (Guitar) make up the influential group, Down. Be it from the ashes of a few different bands, Down has managed to forge it’s own legacy since 1995 and having a little good fun along the way, coming out of the city of New Orleans fittingly enough. Bobby decided to give us a stab in answering the questions. He’s a busy man, so don’t be surprised at some of the shorter answers. Make sure to catch this headliner band at Dirt Fest 2015. NRR: You guys are from the swamps of New Orleans where some of the alligators may be afraid of you biting them. What’s been going on with the band in the last year besides the insane amount of touring you’ve done? Bobby Landgraf: The touring that’s going on this year is Eye Hate God, Corrosion of Conformity, Superjoint, Honky, and Down. Philip’s been producing bands for Housecore Records so we all set sail with our own projects. NRR: Hopefully you guys have a great time on stage this year. Are you looking forward to anything in particular at Dirt Fest 2015 to keep the mojo going? Bobby Landgraf: Doing shows and festivals gets the mojo going. We’re looking forward to droppin’ the hammer at Dirt Fest. NRR: With all of the other projects that the guys have going, is it ever hard to have to focus on a Down related project or is the level artistry simply that good to pull it off without many problems when the time comes? Bobby Landgraf: We are all old school. [We] get in the room together and create on the spot, riffs, breaks, solos, and lyrics. [It’s] not a problem for us. DOWN – Conjure [Official Music Video]

NRR: You’re currently on the Eastbound ‘N’ Down Tour headed towards Dirt Fest and the reviews have been really fantastic. Will there come a time when even you guys, as much as you are professionals, will need a break to recharge? Bobby Landgraf: Sure most bands get a break but look at all the projects surrounding all if us in Down. We’re lifers. It’s what we do. NRR: Doing all of the Dirt Fest interviews has me wanting to change the musical influence questions a bit. Are you ever truly aware of how many of these bands have been influenced by the sounds of previous bands in the past of Down? Bobby Landgraf: Of Course. NRR: What can we expect from the Down camp in the coming days after Dirt Fest is but a dream of a metal, angry, marauding dragon until 2016? Bobby Landgraf: It’s time to write the next Down record. NRR: Is there a band or bands on this year’s Dirt Fest line-up that you are looking forward to seeing as fans? Bobby Landgraf: Child Bite. NRR: How important is selling merch for you guys at a festival like this? Is sitting at the both yourselves still a possibility or, with everything that you have to do, is that a rarity? Bobby Landgraf: Merch is always important. Sometimes we’re out at the booths at festivals for meet and greets. NRR: The combined touring experience on stage during a Down show is amazing. Even in that storied history, there must be a story or two that still makes even you wonder what the hell just happened. Are there any Spinal Tap like moments that come to mind that you’d care to share with us?
Bobby Landgraf: Well, YEAH!! When shit happens to us we all know what is happening. Good or bad. But you don’t. No one does. That’s how we do. NRR: You get washed out to sea while on tour. You see bacon, a guitar, and case of beer floating next to you in the water as you come up on an island. You can keep one with you the entire time you’re stranded, one goes away after a day, and one never makes it. How does it go down for you? Bobby Landgraf: Next question please…

Hail to all Heavy Metalers the world over!” states Anselmo. Portnoy adds, “I could not be any more excited or proud of the Metal Allegiance album… it’s everything I’ve always dreamed of and hoped for and 100 times more!” The album, due Sept. 18, comes with nine original songs, though there’s also a digipak edition that will include an all-star tribute to Ronnie James Dio on a cover of his song “We Rock.” That set also comes with a 45-minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the album. 10 UNFORGETTABLE PHILIP ANSELMO MOMENTS

Loudwire.com By Graham 'Gruhamed' Hartmann

This week’s Loud List is dedicated to one of metal’s most fascinating characters, Philip H. Anselmo. The Pantera / Superjoint Ritual / Down frontman has accomplished a tremendous amount in his near 30-year career, and in this clip, we bring you 10 of Phil’s most memorable moments. There’s a ton of Pantera in the mix, but we begin with a Down festival gig where Phil stops the song early to confront the entire crowd. Unimpressed with the energy he saw, Anselmo demanded the crowd go nuts… or else. We then move into Pantera territory, where the band’s classic self-shot videos come into play. You’ll see Phil shave off Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee‘s hair along with Anselmo’s hilarious impersonations of Elvis Presley and KISSPaul Stanley. Delving into the more serious side of things, this Loud List features a portion of Anselmo’s video eulogy to Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott shortly after the shredding icon was killed in 2004. Phil, who tends to speak in dramatic monologues rather than sentences, also tells a tale of shooting up a longtime friend with heroin, causing the man to overdose. In Phil’s emotional recollection, he holds nothing back, claiming to have “killed my best friend and brought him back to life.” Anselmo’s own overdose, where he was clinically dead for around four minutes, is also explored in this Loud List. Check out the video above for these 10 Unforgettable Philip Anselmo Moments. Also, be sure to watch more exclusive Pantera video below! NOLA Makes Top 10 List of Best Metal Albums of 1995

Loudwire.com The mid 1990s are not thought of with much regard when it comes to heavy metal. A genre that infiltrated and dominated the mainstream had just about fizzled out of the public eye completely by 1995. Metal sank back into the underground, especially with the more extreme acts taking their turn in the metal spotlight. Death and black metal were going as strong as ever with several bands pushing the boundaries even further than just a couple years prior. New sounds started popping up as well with the early stages of the groove oriented nu-metal starting to take form. Amidst all this change, metalheads were given even more dishes to choose from to whet their appetite for all things heavy and distorted. This wound up being a positive force for the genre in 1995, which turned out to be a surprisingly banner year despite what the charts indicated. Take a step back in time as we count down the Top 10 Metal Albums of 1995! DOWN NOLA#8: DOWN 'NOLA" The sludge supergroup Down, made up of New Orleans natives Philip Anselmo (Pantera), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), and the lone outsider Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity), released their debut album in 1995 to much fanfare. The sound is quite definitive of the swamps most of the band grew up around, with heavy bluesy riffs backed by Anselmo's more traditional vocal approach and the occasional banshee scream he's known for. 'NOLA' couldn't have been timed better with each band member experiencing successful careers of their own at that time. What's better than getting a supergroup while everyone is still in their prime? Philip Anselmo Writing New Superjoint Ritual Music, Planning 2015 Housecore Horror Fest

LoudWire.com Rest and relaxation are not words you find in Philip Anselmo‘s vocabulary. In fact, Anselmo is busier than ever these days. In an interview with Spooky Empire (seen above), the vocalist reveals a variety of projects in the works over the coming months. First off, it was recently revealed that Anselmo’s Housecore Horror Fest will return in November. The festival’s future was in doubt after the death of co-founder Corey Mitchell last year, but Anselmo says in the interview above, “Corey was a passionate, unbelievably hard working man — a very, very, very, very, very good friend … This year, we’re dedicating the whole thing to Corey. Rest in peace.” The festival’s website recently revealed that a big announcement on the third installment would be coming soon. Stay tuned to this location for additional details. Also in the interview, Anselmo revealed that there’s plenty on the horizon for a variety of music projects he’s associated with. “Been writing new Superjoint [Ritual]. Been writing new [Philip Anselmo and the] Illegals, been writing, well actually I’m in a secret death metal project with some secret other guys across the equator. It’s called Metroton Nganga and it’s cute, it really is.” Anselmo also revealed he’s been working on some acoustic music as well and has been behind the boards producing a new band called Child Bite that he describes as not really a metal band, but more in the vein of “Black Flag meets Jesus Lizards meets Dead Kennedys meets the Midwest.” And he’s also recently welcomed actor/musician Bill Moseley for sessions at his Nodferatu’s Lair studio. During the period, they wrote four songs together. So stay tuned for a full dose of Philip Anselmo coming at you in future months. Philip Anselmo Plays ‘Wikipedia Fact or Fiction’

Blabbermouth.net William "Bill" Moseley, an American film actor and musician who has starred in a number of cult classic horror films, including "House Of 1000 Corpses", "Repo! The Genetic Opera"and "The Devil's Rejects", has recorded four songs with former PANTERA and current DOWNsinger Philip Anselmo.Speaking to Elliott of Little Punk People, Moseley stated about the collaboration (see video below): "The music that I made with Phil Anselmo, we're gonna put out like a mini-CD. We did four songs in, like, three days. The album is going to be called 'Phil And Bill', it's 'Phil And Bill: Songs Of Death And Despair'. So that oughta be another cheerful, cheerful, addition to the music world." Back in 2013, Moseley told Diabolique about working with Anselmo: "I'm still trying to do a CD with Phil Anselmo of PANTERA. We're pals. I just actually visited him down in Louisiana about three weeks ago. So that's my goal — to do an album called 'Phil And Bill'. We'll see how that goes." Moseley has released records with former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Buckethead in the bandCORNBUGS, and was featured on the axeman's solo work.
